Drug and Alcohol Information
Insomnia is a sleeping disorder that affects 25% of Americans regularly each year. Millions of people are affected by the disorder for many different reasons. Some may experience it due to some sort of trauma or accident and others may experience it due to a genetic problem. But the one discussed here will be insomnia caused due to a past user of an abused substance going on a detox. When a user of an addictive substance decides to cut the substance from their life the user may experience symptoms of withdrawal, in some cases being insomnia. When dealing with insomnia there are many ways of dealing with the disorder that will lead to a normal sleep cycle again. The various ways one can deal with insomnia can be sorted into two categories being: Routine commitments and Health commitments.
While in the process of handling a case of insomnia it is important to commit to daily routines that one sets for themselves. Committing to a new sleep schedule is one of them. While in the process of conquering one’s insomnia, it is important to set a new sleep schedule to get oneself in a routine. Getting the body to do the same thing every night will eventually cause the body to do so naturally, creating a brand-new sleep cycle that fits well for the person’s daily life.
Setting a bedtime routine is another of the commitments one must make. When going to bed, it is important for someone suffering from insomnia to perform relaxing activities. Listening to calming music, reading a book, taking a warm bath, or even keeping the evening beforehand a relaxed one are all options one could take to relax. Establishing a relaxed environment is important in the fight to rid oneself of insomnia, and keeping away from electronic devices like phones, laptops, and TV’s is very important. The electronic devices we all rely on day to day can cause a person to be distracted keeping the person’s brain alert and unable to wind down and sleep. Avoid watching a clock, as this can also distract the brain enough to keep oneself alert.
Lastly, one should be keeping naps short. Napping for longer than 30 during the day can mess with the body’s internal clock and disrupt the sleep cycle the person is trying to set up. Keeping naps to 15-20 minutes at most is a good range of time for a nap as this will replenish enough energy to keep one going throughout the day. A good way to avoid naps is to use one’s bedroom only for sleep. By avoiding the bedroom till bedtime, a person can remove the temptations to sleep or take a nap during the day from their general view and reduce the urges to nap.

During a detox, one is trying to sleep at all costs to conquer insomnia, it is important to watch what you are eating and drinking. When consuming liquids during the day one should account for their preconstructed sleep schedule and should avoid drinking soda any time after six hours before one goes to sleep. This goes for any product containing nicotine as well, as both nicotine and caffeine are stimulants and can cause one’s sleep routine to be disrupted if the chemicals still remain in one’s system before bed. Being cautious of one’s appetite is also important. Making sure one doesn’t go to bed hungry is essential, as going to bed hungry can cause a person to snack before going to bed and potentially eating something containing sugar or any chemical that may give excess energy to the person. So, if one is feeling a bit snackish an hour before bed, then one should have a light and healthy snack so one doesn’t distract themselves in the middle of the night with a growling stomach. Don’t drink too many liquids either, as consuming too much can cause a person to repeatedly awaken throughout the night to use the restroom, disrupting the sleep cycle.
When going throughout one’s day, one should put exercise at the top of their to-do list. When attempting to sleep, people can find themselves with excess energy if all the due is lay around the house or perform no physically intensive activities throughout the day. This can lead to an even higher difficulty trying to sleep, so make sure to exercise regularly. Keeping active and healthy is a surefire way to burn excess energy and calories. Jogging, going to the gym, or even some basic cardio exercises can help alleviate oneself of the excess energy that may be keeping them up at night.
When attempting to rid oneself of their insomnia, it is important to be careful with sleep medications. Some addictions can lead to others, so being careful and responsible with the dosage is important. There are plenty of sleep therapy methods one can research as well, and there are plenty of addiction relief centers that one can visit for further assistance is one struggles dealing with their symptoms of insomnia.
