Addiction Treatment Information
the road to recovery is never always that easy. It may require some set of programs to help the individual become free and independent of the substance they are addicted too. However, the first big step in the journey of recovery from addiction is to acknowledge that you truly have a problem with addiction to substances and are willing to break free from that addiction. This spurs you to seek help through any of the many types of addiction treatment programs around you.
There are several treatment programs available for individuals that are addicted to substances, and the program(s) chosen will depend on the nature or severity of the addiction. People that have a huge concentration of harmful drugs in their system may first have to undergo a detoxification program before going into a residential or inpatient rehab facility. Others with mild forms of addiction to substances may obtain treatment through an outpatient facility, while moderate to severe forms may be admitted in an inpatient program.
It is also worthy of note that there is no one sure path for everybody. As an individual suffering with Substance Use Disorder, you can go through these addiction treatment programs and still fall back if you do not continue to recover after treatment. The addiction recovery process is a lifetime commitment. In other words, the recovery process starts with you.
That being said, we shall now look at the common treatment programs available.
The 12 Steps are a set of guiding principles outlining the course of action for recovery from alcoholism. They were first published by a group known as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Although these guidelines were originally established for alcoholics alone with a spiritual undertone, they have, over the years, gained prominence in recovery from all forms of addiction, and a plethora of addiction support groups have imbibed the steps.
The following are the 12 Steps as originally published by Alcoholics Anonymous:

The detoxification program aims at removing every trace of the substance from the patient’s system and helps him, or her get through the withdrawal symptoms. The program is best suited for patients suffering from moderate to severe forms of drug and alcohol addiction.
In very severe cases, special therapy and medications may be required to help the patient alleviate the pains of withdrawal, and these medications wane until the patient becomes completely independent of the substance.
In this program, the patient stays within the drug and alcohol rehab facility all through the addiction recovery process. The program is structured to treat all underlying problems with the patient’s addiction. A facility is a secluded place filled with specialists and other addiction patients. This presents a good environment for patients to interact and help each other through the process.
For patients struggling with chronic addiction and dual diagnosis, inpatient rehab is the best treatment program. They are offered a 24-hour medical and therapeutic care until they regain their full health and happiness.
In the outpatient program, the addiction patient is not confined to a rehab facility but is allowed to receive treatment sessions and return to his or her home after each session. The processes involved in the outpatient program are more or less the same as those with the inpatient program, save for the fact that patients are allowed to live their lives amongst normal people while undergoing treatment and recovering. For this reason, the program is recommended only for patients with mild cases of addiction who have shown commitment and discipline in their path to recovery. Inpatients who have shown a significant level of recovery may be allowed to continue the treatment process as outpatients.
This program is created for patients (especially inpatients) who have shown levels of recovery but who still need to stay within a regulated environment to nurture their new-found health and habits.
There are faith-based centers in which like-minded individuals of the same faith help each other through addiction by offering specialized programs that center around their religious faith, drawing the patients closer to spirituality and doing away with their past lives.

The Admission or intake phase involves meeting with a professional and getting admitted to the treatment center. The professional will then carry out several assessments to determine the best approach to handling the patient’s situation. There is no fixed approach, and the approach must be customized to handle the peculiarity of each individual.
During this phase, a medical and psychological assessment would be carried out to determine the level of contamination of the patient’s system, their substance dependence, and the presence of mental illness. This helps in determining the best way to tailor the program for optimal results in the individual.
In this phase of the treatment process, the patient is safely detoxified through a medical procedure. The importance of having medical detoxification is heightened, given the degree of withdrawal symptoms that some recovering patients have shown in the past. They can be highly unpleasant, and so, medications are given to ease these symptoms.
The dose and type of medication given will depend on the substance dependence. The patient will first be tested to see the risks of the withdrawal symptoms, and then appropriate steps will be taken to alleviate them. If your reluctance to get treatment is a result of this fear, there is no need to fear anymore. The professionals have your best interests at heart.
After getting detoxed, the patient is then set for rehabilitation. The rehabilitation process entails a lot of therapy and counseling to help the individuals reach their full state of well-being physically and mentally, and this can take place in an outpatient or inpatient rehab, sober living home, or a faith-based center as having been discussed.
The therapies include
Rehab therapy–where through extensive counsel, the underlying cause of addiction is discovered, and this promotes long-term cure.
Individual therapy–where the patients get to learn how to use their time for more productive activities, identifying their drug abuse triggers and how to avoid them to prevent relapse.
Group therapy–where patients interact and help each other develop.
Family therapy–the family members of the patient may also be involved in the therapy session to act as a pillar of support.
Recovering doesn’t always end with leaving the rehab center. Recovery is a lifelong process, and there is a need to have a post-rehab therapy program where the patient can meet with a counselor or other patients who are also in recovery, and this will help keep the individual in line. There are also support groups and follow-up programs held by many rehab facilities for their post-recovery patients.
Aftercare would vary depending on the individual. Discuss with a counselor to know the plan best suited for you.
