for drugs and alcohol is crucial to keeping the individual focused and committed to his or her path of recovery from addiction. It is like continued education for the individual, a reminder. After learning all there is to learn during therapy, it is easy for one to fall back to their old ways when they leave that environment; but when such individuals get to meet other like-minded individuals from time to time, to discuss and remind them of all they’ve learned in addiction treatment, they are encouraged and inspired to stay true to sobriety and the new-found life.
and most of these support groups are customized for a specific type of addiction. Getting the right support group that suits you can mean the difference between your recovery from addiction and relapse.

12-Step support groups are well-known groups which utilize the highly famous 12-Step model as their standard for addiction recovery. The 12-Steps were first published in the 1939 book Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as guidelines for recovering from alcoholism, and for decades have been utilized by rehab centres and support groups for all forms of addiction. The 12-Steps have been proven to be very effective in helping individuals recover from substance abuse because the program allows individuals to interpret and adapt to the guidelines according to their situations.
These 12- Steps are as follows from the AA “big book”
Despite being originally established with a focus on alcoholism, another group known as Narcotics Anonymous (NA) has sprung out of the 12-Step program. Rather than alcoholics, the NA group consists of people recovering from drug dependence.

SMART is another support group that encourages individuals in recovery to manage and control their urges by understanding the underlying causes and feelings which tempt them to indulge. Al-Anon is a support group meant for family and friends of individuals who are battling alcohol and drug abuse. The family and friends of addicts also suffer the pain and trauma of the addiction, and so they need all the support they can get, and they need to know they’re not alone in the struggle. If you feel too uncomfortable being with a group, then having sessions with an addiction counselor can be the best step you can ever take. The role of a counselor is to provide professional and unprejudiced advice while supporting you through your delicate path to recovery. One great benefit of having a counselor is that you’re their focus during your private sessions. So they evaluate your substance abuse problem and form an individualized plan solely for you. They provide psycho-education and psycho-evaluation.
The counselor can also organize group sessions with your family and friends if that’s fine by you. This is highly instrumental in your recovery process.
Joining a support group can be a huge step in your life. At the same time, there is that feeling of oddness and uneasiness which tends to pull you back from attending your first meeting, but always remember that those you would meet are people like you, battling through similar problems. Being together with such people is healing. By mutual support, you can all help each other get through the storm and put the past behind.
